SEASONS 1999-2002

The last 4 years of the Tom Coughlin regime began with a near Super Bowl appearance but culminated with a gradual descent into salary cap hell and 3 straight losing seasons. The end of one era lead into another. Click each year to learn more!

YEAR 5

(14-2)

The greatest team in Jaguars history had the NFL's #1 defense and #6 offense. WR Jimmy Smith had a career year, catching 116 passes for 1,636 yards. The "jaggernaut" team cruised to the #1 seed in the playoffs. In the divisional round, the Jaguars dismantled the Dolphins 62-7 in QB Dan Marino's final game under center. But the one thorn in the Jaguars' side who beat them twice in the regular season--the Tennessee Titans--stopped Jacksonville in the AFC Championship Game, ending a remarkable season not repeated since then.

YEAR 6

(7-9)

The hangover from the devastating AFC Championship Game loss the prior year lingered into the 2000 season as the Jaguars started (2-6), never quite recovering and ending a 4-year playoff run. One of the lone highlights of this disappointing season was RB Fred Taylor's string of consecutive 100-yard rushing games (9), including a Three Rivers Stadium rushing record of 234 yards in Week 12. Taylor finished the 2000 campaign with 1,399 rushing yards and 12 TDs.

YEAR 7

(6-10)

"The Curse of the Titans" continued at the beginning of the 2001 season. Just 2 games into the young season, RB Fred Taylor was lost for the year due to a nagging groin injury in the game vs. Tennessee. Coach Tom Coughlin frustrated fans with his "will-he-or-won't-he-play" approach he took with Taylor. The offense as a whole struggled, plummeting to their lowest league ranking since the inaugural season. QB Mark Brunell didn't have a single 300-yard passing game. The Jaguars went through a 5-game losing streak of close games where they lost by a combined total of 25 points. The team never recovered from the (3-8) start.

YEAR 8

(6-10)

The Jaguars began 2002 in the new AFC South Division, keeping their rivalry with the Titans but introducing new foes in the Colts and expansion Texans. The Texans actually got their first-ever division win vs. Jacksonville in Week 8. The Jaguars got off to a quick (3-1) start, kicking off talk of a return to playoff glory. However, the Jaguars faded down the stretch, going (3-9) to finish the season. Out of the 10 losses the Jaguars had, they lost 9 of them by less than 9 points. One of the most heartbreaking losses was a Hail Mary pass from QB Tim Couch in Week 14 to lift Cleveland to a 1 point victory, a microcosm of a lost season. It ultimately cost Coach Tom Coughlin his job, ushering in a new era.
