SEASONS 2007-2010

The Jaguars got the David Garrard era underway with a playoff berth in 2007. However, a devastating draft class in 2008 and poor free agent signings during the next few years would set the franchise back in a big way. Click each year to learn more!

Over the past few years leading up to the 2007 season, the Jaguars went back and forth between QBs Byron Leftwich and David Garrard under center. After a dismal preseason from Leftwich, coach Del Rio decided to jettison Leftwich and made Garrard the bona fide starter.

Garrard turned in a spectacular season, throwing for 18 TDs and only 3 INTs. RB Fred Taylor provided a last hoorah, running for 1,202 yards and 5 TDs, which earned him his first (and only) Pro Bowl appearance.

WR Reggie Williams became the first Jaguar receiver to have at least 10 TD receptions in a season. The Jaguars became the first team to beat the Steelers twice in Pittsburgh in the same season: a 29-22 victory in Week 15 and a 31-29 victory in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. The Jaguars would once again fall to the Patriots in the playoffs after QB Tom Brady started the game 16-for-16, a single game postseason record, and finished 26-for-28 to break QB Phil Simms' record for completion percentage in a playoff game.

The Jaguars rolled the dice in the 2008 draft, trading up with Baltimore from spot #17 to #8 to select DE Derrick Harvey. Baltimore ultimately selected QB Joe Flacco with that #17 pick, a player who has won multiple playoff games in his short career. Harvey was a major bust and was out of the NFL by 2011. The free agent signings were equally as dismal. WR Jerry Porter was signed to a 6-year contract worth $30 million (with $10 million guaranteed). He rewarded the Jaguars with a gimpy hamstring and 11 catches for 181 yards and 1 TD reception. He was cut the following offseason. CB Drayton Florence was given a 6-year contract worth $36 million (with $13 million guaranteed). He rewarded the Jaguars with 0 INTs and plenty of long pass plays allowed from the opposing teams. He was also cut the following offseason. The torch was officially passed from RB Fred Taylor to RB Maurice Jones-Drew. The latter rushed for 824 yards and 12 TDs, while Taylor (in his last season with Jacksonville) ran for 556 yards and 1 TD. The Jaguars offense dropped from #6 in 2007 to #24 in 2008 for points scored. The loss of Defensive Coordinator Mike Smith to Atlanta was definitely felt, as the defense dropped from #10 in 2007 to #21 in 2008 for points allowed.

RB Maurice Jones-Drew was officially "the man" in 2009 after the departure of legendary RB Fred Taylor. Jones-Drew proved he could handle the workload, running for 1,391 yards and 15 TDs. In Week 2 vs. Arizona, QB Kurt Warner completed 24 of 26 passes against Jacksonville, breaking the NFL's single-game record for completion percentage in the regular season. In Week 5 @ Seattle, the Jaguars were completely dismantled 41-0 by the Seahawks (only the 3rd time the team had ever been shut out). QB David Garrard was a turnover machine, throwing 10 INTs and fumbling 14 times (leading the NFL). The Jaguars clawed their way to a (6-4) record, putting themselves in the playoff hunt. But yet another late-season swoon (1-5) kept the Jaguars on the sidelines once more.

QB David Garrard lead the NFL again with fumbles (11), but he also set a Jaguars record for passing TDs in a season (23). RB Maurice Jones-Drew earned his 2nd Pro Bowl trip, courtesy of a 1,324 yard rushing season. The 2 most memorable moments of 2010 came against AFC South division rivals. In Week 4 vs. Indianapolis, the Jaguars were tied 28-28. With :05 left in regulation, K Josh Scobee booted a career-best 59-yard FG to give the Jaguars a win as time expired. In Week 10 vs. Houston, the Jaguars were tied 24-24. With :03 left in regulation from the 50-yard line, QB David Garrard heaved a Hail Mary pass that got batted into the arms of WR Mike Thomas for a TD, lifting the Jaguars to a 31-24 victory. TE Marcedes Lewis had his best season as a pro, hauling in 10 TD receptions in 2010. In what developed into a trend in the later Del Rio years, once again, the Jaguars were in playoff contention at (8-5). But they lost the last 3 games (2 to divisional opponents) and spent another season contemplating how to rise above mediocrity.
